Red Maple Burl
Source: North America and Europe.
Description: Burls are a growth on the trunk of a tree caused by a fungus or insect attack. Burls contain highly figured and unusual grain patterns and are coveted by woodworkers. Maple is part of the genus, Acer, which means sharp in latin. The name probably derives from the sharply pointed leaves of the maple tree. Maple wood is known for it's subtle beauty and hard density. This wood was impregnated with a red dye before being stabilized to accentuate the figure in the grain.
Availability: Burls of any type are available in limited supply.
