Description: A medium density hardwood harvested from the Mpingo tree of Africa. Color is actually an extremely dark brown with even darker brown grain. Sapwood is yellow. Blackwood must be properly dried to be usable for woodworking. It is much soght after by makers of woodwind instruments such as oboes, bassoons and clarinets.
Availability: African blackwood is available but quickly becoming scarce. It is being harvested at unsustainable rates and being sold in Kenya. An Mpingo tree requires approximately 60 years to mature.
